What is Tesla
Tesla is an innovative automotive and energy company on a mission to accelerate the world’s transition toward sustainable energy. Besides electric vehicles, Tesla builds clean energy generation and storage products.
History of Tesla
Tesla was founded in July 2003 by engineers Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning in California, USA. The company was named after the renowned physicist and inventor Nikola Tesla. In 2004, Elon Musk invested $30 million and joined Tesla’s Board as Chairman.
On June 29, 2010, Tesla went public via IPO, selling 13.3 million shares at $17 per share on Nasdaq, raising approximately $226.1 million.
Tesla Today – Key Trends & Challenges
- In Q3 2025, Tesla delivered a record 497,099 vehicles, driven in part by strong demand ahead of the expiration of the U.S. EV tax credit.
- Despite this delivery record, Tesla’s net profit dropped by 37% in the same quarter, to about $1.4 billion.
- Revenue in Q3 2025 rose to $28.1 billion, up ~12% year over year.
- However, the company’s profit margin remains under pressure, due to compressing automotive margins, higher costs, and declining income from regulatory credits (carbon credits were down significantly).
- On the demand side, Tesla has faced weakening sales in key markets. In Q2 2025, it delivered 384,122 vehicles, a drop of 13.5% compared to the previous year.
- Tesla is also grappling with broader competition, an aging model lineup, and political/headline risk tied to Elon Musk’s public persona.
- The company has announced more than 10% reduction in its global workforce to streamline operations.
- At the same time, Tesla is pushing forward with long-term innovation: expansion into AI, robotaxi services, and robotics remain central to its strategy.
